Human trafficking is a serious problem in the United States and abroad. In addition to a law enforcement and human rights implications, it is also a health issue. Recent research has shown that victims of human trafficking have serious physical and mental health problems, including acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, and impairments such as substance use disorders. A landmark study in 2014 found that 87.8% of survivors indicated that they had sought health care during the time they were trapped in the trafficking situation and that health care providers are first responders who need to be trained to know the signs and indicators of human trafficking and to know how to respond appropriately. This general human trafficking training for health providers covers the following:

• Research findings on health issues of human trafficking survivors
• Signs and indicators of human trafficking - broken down for the first time into signs at first contact with health provider (scheduling, receptionist), signs from chief complaint, signs during medical history and signs during exam.
• Role playing for health providers on tough subjects, such as mandatory reporting of child sex trafficking
• Unconscious bias in health and human trafficking and how to address it
• Recognizing and removing victim and provider barriers to care
• Best practices for health providers including a victim-centered approach, trauma-informed care, creating community connections to meet the multi-disciplinary needs of survivors, warm hand-offs
• New ICD codes on human trafficking and how to use them
• Other emerging issues, including mandatory reporting, treating immigrant victims and survivors, and using electronic medical records in trafficking cases
